Phone Clover’s browser softphone needs microphone access to place or answer a call. Here is exactly when that gets asked for, and what to do if it goes wrong.
Warning: Because the permission prompt only appears at call time, a rep who is about to handle their first-ever call on a new computer should expect a browser prompt to interrupt that first call. Allow it before trying to speak.
When the browser asks
Phone Clover does not ask for microphone access when you open the phone or load the page. The browser’s permission prompt appears at the moment you place a call or answer one, not before. If you have never placed or answered a call yet, you have not been asked yet either.
Note: Voice calling in Phone Clover is desktop browser only. There is no separate mobile app permission flow for calling; the browser handles the same prompt on any desktop browser.
What the error messages mean
If the microphone is unavailable, blocked, or already in use, you’ll see one of these:
| Message | What it means |
|---|---|
| “Microphone permission denied. Allow the mic for this page (and for the HighLevel tab).” | The browser or site setting has the mic blocked |
| “No microphone found.” | The browser did not detect any microphone device |
| “Could not open the microphone (in use by another app?).” | Another application has the microphone locked |
Fixing a denied microphone
When the permission-denied error appears, a Retry button tries again immediately, asking the browser for microphone access a second time. If your browser still has the microphone blocked for this site, retrying again will not help, and you’ll see: “Still blocked. Allow the mic in the browser address bar, then reload.”
Steps:
- Click the camera/microphone icon in your browser’s address bar (its exact look varies by browser).
- Set microphone access for this site to Allow.
- Reload the page.
- Place or answer a call again.
If no microphone is found
Check that a microphone is actually connected and recognized by your operating system, outside the browser. A laptop’s built-in microphone should work without extra setup; a USB headset that was plugged in after the browser was already open sometimes needs the page reloaded before the browser sees it.
If the microphone is in use by another app
Close other applications that might be holding the microphone open (a video call app, a recording tool, another browser tab on a call). Only one application can usually use the microphone at a time.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Has a call actually been placed or answered yet? The prompt only appears at that moment.
- If denied, use the Retry button first.
- If retry doesn’t work, allow the microphone from your browser’s address bar, then reload.
- If no microphone is found, confirm one is connected at the operating-system level, then reload.
- If the microphone is in use, close other apps that might be holding it, then try again.
